Should I sanitise our water coolers myself?
The simple answer to this is no. Whilst self – cleaning might seem like a decent cost saving exercise, we would not advise attempting this yourself. Each and every water contact part should be completely sanitised and there are many parts inside a water cooler that can’t be seen or cleaned properly by simply pouring sanitisation fluid into the top of the reservoir. There’s the liability too. Would you really want the liability if something went wrong?
So how do I get my office water coolers cleaned then?
Your first step is to find a company affiliated with the EDWCA (European Drinking Water Cooler Association). All EDWCA members are professionally monitored to ensure they operate within the highest hygiene standards and they will be fully trained with hygiene awareness right at the top of their agenda.
Once you have found a reputable supplier you should ask them if they have ever sanitised your particular type of water cooler. You should tell them the make, model and serial number and ask them for a copy of the specific instructions on how to maintain your water cooler type. A reputable water cooler company will be able to provide this, in turn providing you with the peace of mind that the job will be completed to a satisfactory standard. Once the water cooler has been cleaned you should then ask them to provide a sanitisation record. This is simply a card affixed to the rear of the water cooler which is signed 6 monthly by the engineer who performed the service.
Although many servicing contracts do not include parts or labour to fix broken water coolers, most parts are pretty easy to come by and your local water cooler company should be able to provide these if they are still available.
